Wiel Arets launches new monograph, ‘Nature is Nature’
‘Nature is Nature’ is a monograph on the work of the esteemed architecture and design studio of Wiel Arets. This publication is a visual and textual flow that presents the studio’s output, using a series of drawings, images, diagrams, texts, theories, sketches, and citations from commentary on the work. Having been founded by the acclaimed and globally renowned intellectual, architect, and educator Wiel Arets immediately after matriculating from his study of architecture at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands; the work of the studio is instantly recognizable to those familiar with Arets’ philosophies on the inhabitation of space, which he terms ‘interiority’. Wiel Arets, is intensely concerned with the relations between man and nature, interior and exterior, and the experience of the body moving through space within his series of preconscribed cinematographic sequences.
It is the circulation and routing in Arets’ oeuvre, and the ergonomics of interaction with his industrial designs, that is the often-overlooked though key feature that defines the work of his studio. Arets places an enormous emphasis on the interlocking of spaces within his buildings–which are intertwined and accessed through playful sets of staircases, ramps, and other ethereal experiences that aid in the navigation of the body through space. The result of this amalgamation of his signature projects is an oeuvre that is all too often left uncaptured in images. With philosophical essays that allow a look into Arets’ thoughts toward architecture; contributions by scholars that contextualize the studio’s output since its founding; and thousands of images that directly relay the sequencing of inhabiting and moving through a selection of key built works from his oeuvre–this long awaited, meticulously edited and designed monograph, is a reflection and celebration of a life spent dedicated to progressing the ideals and global conversations on architecture spearheaded by Wiel Arets.
